What should we eat in Summers

It's summer-that amazing time of year when fresh produce abounds. I love that there's an abundance of fresh, delicious and healthy choices. Better yet: many of summer's fruits and vegetables are brimming with secret health benefits. Here are some of my favorites and why they're a particularly good choice in the summer.

1. Watermelon

Staying hydrated keeps your memory sharp and your mood stable. It also helps keep your body cool (by sweating) during hot summer months. The good news is that you don't just have to drink water. You can eat it, too: in addition to delivering skin-protecting lycopene, watermelon is 92 percent water (hence the name). Another boon? Research shows that eating foods that are full of water helps keep you satisfied on fewer calories. (Interestingly enough, drinking water alongside foods doesn't have the same effect.)

2. Cucumber

One of the most popular vegetables during summer times, cucumbers are not only nutritious but also versatile. Most often, they are consumed raw in the form of salads, or as part of beverages. Some varieties of cucumbers are added in curries like rasam.

3. Brinjals

Brinjals, or eggplants, may seem like an unlikely addition in a list of vegetables good for the summer. This wholesome vegetable is popularly consumed as a side dish in India and pairs well with almost all combination of spices.
4. Bitter Gourd
An unsung hero, the bitter gourd may not be on anyone’s favourite list, but it should be, considering its health benefits. Historically, bitter gourd juice has been used as a popular home remedy to treat various ailments of the stomach and heart.

5. Green Beans

Green beans or just beans are a staple in the Indian cuisine. Steamed, stir-fried or even raw, this tasty vegetable is a popular addition to various weight-loss diets for its low-calorie count. It is one of the most easily available vegetables in the market as it is grown all year round.

6. Blueberries

Fresh blueberries straight from the berry patch are a special treat! Turns out the antioxidants in them may help ward off muscle fatigue by mopping up the additional free radicals that muscles produce during exercise, according to recent research out of New Zealand.

7. Blueberries

This summer enjoy both the sweet and tart varieties. Drinking tart cherry juice can help you get a better night's sleep and reduce post-workout pain. But did you know that compounds in tart cherries may also help you slim down and get leaner? The anthocyanins in tart cherries activate a molecule that helps rev up fat burning and decrease fat storage. Not to be outdone, sweet cherries are loaded with potassium, a natural blood-pressure reducer. Plus, sweet cherries are rich in beta carotene, vitamin C, anthocyanins and quercetin, which may work together synergistically to fight cancer.

8. Orange

The sweet citrus fruit is rich in potassium, a nutrient that's crucial in the summer. "You lose potassium through sweat, which puts you at risk for muscle cramps," says Erin Palinski, RD, CDE, LDN, CPT, author of the forthcoming Belly Fat Diet for Dummies. "Eating oranges replenishes your supply and keeps muscle cramps away," she explains. Oranges are also about 80% water, so popping a few juicy slices will keep you hydrated during your sweatiest summer days.
